Skin checks and why they’re important

Active Medical Centre Skin Health

“It won’t happen to me, I don’t sun bake often and I have good skin.” Sound familiar?

Caroline Springs Doctors have seen pre-cancerous skin lesions occur in patients from varying age groups. Quite often in areas of the body which can go unnoticed – which is why it is important to visit your GP for an annual skin check. Early detection can save lives.

What to expect during an annual skin check

Your doctor will systematically check your skin and pay particular attention to any spots of concern, moles, blemishes or sun-damaged skin for irregularities. If necessary your doctor may take a closer look with a dermatoscope, take measurements and document size and shape of areas that need to be kept under review. If concerned, your doctor will photograph any suspicious lesions and in some cases discuss options for removal.

 How long will it take?

In most cases 15 minutes with the doctor is all it takes to complete an annual skin check and ease away any worry or uncertainty that you may have. If there are numerous spots or suspicious areas more time will be required.  Any necessary procedures will be explained in detail and scheduled at your convenience.
